Sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas

Ιερό Απόλλωνα Μαλεάτα, Επίδαυρος, Αργολίδα

High on a low spur of Mount Kynortion, east of the great sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus, the Sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas preserves one of the region's longest unbroken stories of worship. Its summit held a small Early Helladic settlement that was never built over again. By the Late Bronze Age an open-air altar was receiving animal sacrifices and votives, among them bronze double axes, swords and clay animal figurines, left in the ash. Cult activity continued through classical, Hellenistic and Roman times.
