The Salt Pans of Kitros lie beside a sandy beach near Ancient Pydna, a settlement dating from the 8th-7th century BC. The area’s principal feature is the internationally significant wetland known as the lagoon of Alikes Kitros, where salt is extracted from seawater in flats immediately adjacent to the harbour. The site is also notable as the seat of the Bishop of present-day Louloudies Kitros. Located 20 kilometres from Katerini, the region’s capital, the pans are accessible from the National Motorway E75, the Old National Road from Salonika to Katerini, and a recently completed coastal road running from Olympic Beach to Nea Agathoupoli.
