Perched on a rock pillar in the Meteora landscape near Kalambaka, Roussanou Monastery is a Byzantine foundation whose recorded history reaches back to 1288. The site belongs to that remarkable tradition of monasteries built in remote, elevated places, where isolation itself was part of the spiritual life. Restoration and consolidation work carried out in 1985 and 1986 by the Seventh Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities helped preserve the monastery, one of the Meteora complexes that still defines this dramatic corner of Trikala.
