High in the Amari valley of Rethymno, this Roman settlement preserves the traces of ancient daily and religious life. Excavations between 1991 and 2001 uncovered the sanctuary of Hermes Kranaios, a god worshipped here in a landscape that later received the Church of Saint Anthony. A rescue excavation in 1994 gathered finds from the sanctuary, and further work in 2000 combined renewed digging with care for the surrounding natural setting. The site reveals how Roman inhabitants of Crete wove worship, settlement, and terrain together across centuries of continuous use.
