Rogoi occupies a hill above a bend in the Louros river, in the Filippiada area of Preveza. Its name derives from "arogi", meaning help, as it once sheltered coastal populations from raids by Slavs and Bulgar tribes. The castle's finest period came during the 13th and early 14th centuries, under the Despotate of Epirus. In old times the Louros was navigable, so the fortress stood ideally placed to watch river traffic, and before 1950 the surrounding ground was swamp. The enceinte runs for a thousand metres, enclosing some 32,000 square metres. Recent maintenance has improved it markedly; while not the most striking castle in the region, it is now the best-kept Byzantine monument in Epirus. Its setting, on a river curve, remains its chief charm, and it rewards a visit more for atmosphere than for dramatic ruins.
