At Rizvan Metochi near Rethymno, the remains of a Byzantine mansion speak of rural authority in an age when land and defense were inseparable. The complex, defined by its tower, would have belonged to a local landowner or minor official, a self-contained world of residence, storage and protection. The tower stood as a vertical assertion of status, serving as both lookout and final refuge. Today scattered stones and the outline of walls hint at the lives once lived within this fortified country estate.
