High on its hilltop near Andritsaina-Krestena in the Peloponnese, the Platiana acropolis commands wide views over the surrounding landscape. The citadel was occupied across the Classical, Hellenistic-Republican and Roman periods, its walls and terraces layered with the work of successive generations. Excavations between 1999 and 2010 uncovered significant structures, among them a probable temple-like building on the east slopes, thought to have served a public function. Partly preserved today, the site rewards visitors who climb to it with a vivid sense of how Greek hilltop strongholds evolved over centuries.
