The Panathenaic Stadium in central Athens is a horseshoe of white marble that carries the long history of Greek athletic competition. Its roots reach back to a fourth-century BC stadium, home to the Panathenaic Games, and the site endured through archaic, classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and late antique times. What visitors see today is largely a late nineteenth-century reconstruction built on those ancient foundations and clad in marble. Known in Greek as the Kallimarmaro, it remains a striking landmark in the heart of the city.
