Palaiopyrgos

On a low hill at the northern edge of the village stands Palaiopyrgos, a Frankish tower reduced to little more than a memory. Nothing is recorded of its builders or the year of its raising, and the surviving remains amount to a single ruined tower, likely no more than a guard post during the Frankish period. Its purpose would have been modest: to watch the approaches and signal the presence of trouble. The masonry, where it still stands, offers no inscription or heraldic clue, leaving the visitor to imagine the petty lord or garrison that once manned this spot. Access is free and easy, the tower being a short walk from the village exit. It is a place for those who enjoy the fragmentary, the unrecorded, the quiet footnote of medieval Greece. The hill itself gives a decent view over the surrounding country, which is perhaps all the explanation the tower ever needed.
