A Venetian fortress on a rocky promontory that gave Corfu town its name, two peaks joined to the island by a moat cut through rock, the Contrafossa, which turns the citadel into an artificial islet. The Venetians held Corfu for four centuries and made this the strongest point in the Ionian, repelling repeated Ottoman sieges that took the rest of Greece. Inside sit barracks, a Georgian garrison church from the British period, and views along the whole channel toward Albania.
