The Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians stands on St Mark’s Square, built after the 1953 earthquakes on land donated by the Holy Metropolitan Church of Zakynthos. It opened on 24 August 1966, organised as a literary-social society established in 1959. The ground floor holds the Mausoleum containing the remains of national poets Dionyssios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos, with Kalvos’s wife, since 17 January 1968. The first floor includes the D. Solomos, D. Romas, and Nikolaos and Thaleia Kolyva rooms, plus the Wing of Eminent Zakynthian People (extended with the Panagiotis and Efi Micheli Room). The second floor houses the Stavros S. Niarchos Room with the Library and Documents Section. Exhibits include icons from the Cretan and Cretan-Eptanisian School (17th-18th century), portraits of prominent Zakynthians (17th-20th century), bronze busts, period furniture from Zakynthos mansions, musical instruments, ceramics, wood carvings, and archaeological and folklore objects.
