Standing at Nicopolis near Preveza, the Monument of Augustus was raised around 20 BCE, a Roman landmark commemorating Octavian's naval victory at Actium. Excavations between 1974 and 1985 revealed a stretch of the paved Roman road, 5.40 metres wide, that once linked the city westward to the port of Gomaros. Beneath later Byzantine fortifications, archaeologists also uncovered the remains of late Roman houses. Together these finds sketch the daily life of a thriving Roman city, where grand monuments, busy roads and harbours, and ordinary homes stood side by side.
