The Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Dryovouno is the oldest monastery in the prefecture of Kozani. An inscription above the main church entrance records that construction began in 1592 and was completed and restored in 1652, with the iconography dating to that same year. Some traditions, though unsupported by written sources, suggest a foundation as early as 1101. The monastery is closely associated with Saint Kosmas of Aetolia, who visited between 1775 and 1777 during his Third Missionary Journey. He is said to have healed monks suffering from a dysentery epidemic by sanctifying water from a nearby spring; a chapel dedicated to him now marks the spot, and the spring’s water is considered holy. Located at an altitude of 1000 metres near the village of Dryovouno, the monastery served as a refuge and ammunition depot during periods of national struggle.
