Near the village of Drymonas in Phocis, the Monastery of the Forerunner stands as a quiet witness to centuries of Orthodox monastic life. Dedicated to John the Forerunner, it belongs to the many remote monasteries that dotted the Greek countryside during the Byzantine period, places of worship and retreat set apart from the world. The monastery's catholicon, its principal church, was the subject of a scholarly study by K. Oikonomou, and the site was excavated in 1995. Today the monastery lies disused, its church studied and recorded.
