Perched on the heights of Santorini, the Byzantine Monastery of St. Nicholas carries a sacred history far older than its Christian walls. Long before the monastery rose, this commanding spot above the Aegean held classical and Hellenistic sanctuaries, among them temples to Athena and possibly Zeus, which continued in use through the Roman period. What you see today is the latest chapter in a continuity of worship spanning centuries, where Christian devotion replaced ancient cult practice on ground that had been hallowed for generations.
