Monastery of St. John Kynigos

Ι. Μονή Αγίου Ιωάννη Κυνηγού, Αγία Παρασκευή, Αττική

On the slopes of Mount Hymettos in Attica stands the Monastery of St. John Kynigos, a Byzantine foundation from the early 12th century. Its curious name, "of the Hunter," comes from its founder, remembered as Vasilios or John the Hunter, and the monks knew it as the monastery "of the hunter of philosophers." Today it serves as a women's convent, and the site is recognized as a protected building in Greece. A visit offers a quiet encounter with the layered religious life of Byzantine Attica.
