At the foot of Mount Ainos near the village of Fragata on Kefalonia, the Monastery of St. Gerasimos occupies ground with deep roots. It was raised upon an older monastery dating to around 1200, the age of the Crusades, and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Locals from Valsamata call it New Jerusalem. The priest George Valsamos granted the site to Saint Gerasimos, a monk from Trikala in Corinth, who settled here, and the monastery is today a protected building in Greece.
