The Monastery of St. George near Malesina, a protected Byzantine foundation, began in the eleventh century, founded by two monks from Mount Athos and first dedicated to the Virgin Mary; the name of Saint George came only after the seventeenth century. Excavations between 1983 and 1999 uncovered the main entrance in the northwest corner of the perimeter wall, guarded by a small tower, along with sculpture fragments, Roman remains, statues, stelae, and tombs. The earthquake of 1894 destroyed most of the complex, leaving part of the catholicon with its layered wall paintings.
