Near Stomio in the Larissa region stands the Monastery of St. Demetrios, a Byzantine foundation whose surviving katholikon is a triconch church, its plan built around three apses. Tradition links the monastery's founding to the age of Justinian I, and the site carries the memory of later Byzantine patronage and rebuilding. Archaeological trial trenches dug beneath the katholikon floor in 2005 revealed earlier floors and remains, evidence that generations of builders and worshippers layered this sacred ground. The monastery is designated an archaeological site, preserving its story for travelers drawn to Thessaly's Byzantine heritage.
