Set in the Pylae district of Trikala, the Monastery of Saint George belongs to a landscape rich in Byzantine religious architecture. Excavations carried out between 1984 and 2000 by the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities revealed traces of churches and houses, and the restoration and anastylosis work undertaken here was carefully recorded. Further investigation during water diversion works in 1999 brought to light remains of Hellenistic dwellings, layering centuries of habitation beneath and around the monastic site. Today the monastery is recognized as a protected building, preserving this quiet accumulation of history.
