The Monastery of Prophet Elias near Chrissó in Phocis is a Byzantine foundation dated to 1019, one of the many monastic houses that once dotted the Greek countryside. Its setting, in the wider region of Delphi, places it within a landscape layered with far older remains from classical, Hellenistic, and Roman times. Like other isolated communities of its era, the monastery offered retreat from the world and a lasting expression of the Orthodox tradition of withdrawn spiritual life.
