On the southern slope of Mount Penteli, the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, known simply as the Penteli Monastery, was founded in 1578 by Saint Timotheos of Euripos. This men's monastery held stauropegic status almost from its foundation, placing it directly under the Patriarch of Constantinople until 1858, when it passed to the Archbishopric of Athens. A protected building in Greece, it stands as a quiet testament to Byzantine monastic life and the spiritual authority that once radiated from Constantinople into the Attic landscape.
