On the slopes of Mount Penteli above Athens, the Monastery of Pantokrator Daou preserves the memory of a Byzantine-era foundation begun in the sixteenth century by Dimitrios Anadromaris and Ioannis Doutzis of Alexinas, under Metropolitan Sophronios I and with help from Theofanis Karykis. The community flourished until an Easter night when pirates attacked, plundered the monastery completely, and slaughtered more than 150 monks. Recognized today as a protected building in Greece, the monastery invites quiet reflection on faith, prosperity, and sudden loss.
