High on the slopes of Mount Olympus in Pieria, the Monastery of Kanalon of Olympus holds a quiet place among the mountain's historic religious houses. A Greek Orthodox convent dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos, it was founded in the Byzantine era and is counted alongside Agios Dionysios and Agia Triada at Sparmos as one of the three monasteries of Olympus. Its protected status preserves a building whose setting carries a curious double identity: a Christian sanctuary on the legendary mountain of the ancient gods.
