In the fertile Amari valley of Crete, about 31 kilometres southeast of Rethymnon, the Monastery of Archangels rises some 345 metres above sea level. Its katholikon is dedicated to the Synod of Archangels, also called Taxiarches or Incorporeal. Within the sanctuary, two important icons survive, among them the Holy Trinity, dated 1619. A protected building in Greece, the monastery carries the quiet authority of the Byzantine era, when such foundations shaped worship and daily life across the island.
