The Middle Fountain in Pitsidia, within the Municipality of Phaistos, is a modern structure that sits directly atop layers of far older history. Excavations carried out between 1988 and 2004 revealed that beneath the fountain lie the remains of a Minoan rural villa, its walls exposed during work to install a protective cover over the ancient site around 1999 and 2000. Trial trenches opened to the east and west brought further walls to light. Standing here, a traveler bridges two worlds: the practical fountain of today and the deep Minoan past beneath their feet.
