High above the village of Kamaraki near Tylissos, in the Heraklion region of Crete, the Marmarospilios Cave takes its name from marble, a hint at the pale stone that gives this natural chamber its character. In antiquity, caves across the Cretan landscape served as places of ritual and refuge, and this one belongs to that ancient archaeological world. Its setting in the Malevizi countryside places it within a terrain where such hollows were woven into local life and belief.
