The neoclassical mansion at the Achaia Clauss winery complex in Patras dates to 1861, a piece of Greece's modern industrial age built to serve one of the region's landmark wine estates. Its protected status recognizes both architectural character and setting. The grounds hold far older stories too: in 1987 excavations here brought to light a Byzantine gold hoard of twenty-two coins, including solidi and a semissis from the reign of Emperor Maurice, who ruled from 582 to 602. Layers of winemaking and empire meet on this hillside above Patras.
