High above the Malevizi countryside near Heraklion, this Byzantine fortress was raised to command and protect the surrounding region, its architecture shaped by the strategic concerns of its era. Yet the site's story reaches far deeper than its walls. Excavations in 1999 brought to light a remarkably well preserved skull of a young girl, dated to the second millennium BCE, so intact that her features could be reconstructed. Standing among the fortifications, you sense layers of history: medieval defenses above, and beneath them a much older human presence.
