In the countryside northwest of Komotini, near the village of Symvola, stands a Macedonian tomb from the 4th to early 3rd century BC, raised in the age of Macedonian rule over Thrace. Its discovery came in 1976, after an illegal excavation brought the site to light. Much about the tomb's structure and contents still occupies scholars, for the clandestine disturbance left questions that careful study continues to probe. To stand here is to touch a frontier of the ancient Macedonian world, where monumental burial and local tradition met.
