The Lion of Chaeronea is a monumental marble sculpture from around 330 BCE, standing in Boeotia near the modern town of Chaeronea. It commemorates the historic Battle of Chaeronea, a defining clash of the ancient Greek world. Excavations between 1974 and 2013 revealed a layered site: walls and structures from the late Hellenistic and early Roman periods, along with tombs and other finds. Nearby ancient names, including Chaeronea and Apollo Thourios, hint at a landscape rich with sanctuaries and civic life.
