In Aliartos, Boeotia, a neoclassical mansion stands as the former urban residence and auxiliary building of the Lake Copais Co Ltd, a reminder of the company that once shaped this corner of the region. Excavations carried out between 1973 and 2017 revealed that the site rests on layers of far older history. In 1994, a Classical funeral enclosure and Hellenistic tombs came to light in a necropolis at the settlement's edge, beside the Athens to Lamia national road, alongside inscriptions and traces of ancient roads and churches.
