Koronisia Castle is a small but very well maintained fort standing on the island of Koronisia in the Ambracian gulf. It is the twin of the koules at Laskara, and the two were built together in 1807, during the rule of the notorious Ali Pasha. A second theory, however, places their construction much later, perhaps after 1860, when the Ottomans were reinforcing their defensive positions in the gulf, which at that time formed the frontier between Turkish and Greek territory. The fort is compact in scale, a modest defensive work rather than a grand fortress, and its condition today is excellent. Its precise role in the shifting borderlands of the period remains a matter of debate, but its survival offers a tangible link to a turbulent era of regional power struggles.
