Kasteli tou Emporeiou is a 15th century Venetian citadel, and it stands at the centre of Emporeio, a village roughly 12 kilometres south of Fira on Santorini. Rather than a separate fortress, it is woven into the settlement itself, so there is no formal gate or ticket barrier; you simply walk into the village and find the castle around you. Its condition is described as relatively good, which is remarkable for a structure of this age on an island prone to seismic activity. The Venetians built it as a defensive stronghold, and its layout still shapes the village’s tangled, protective streets. The Kastrologos archive offers no further detail on sieges or specific architectural measurements, but the surviving fabric speaks for itself. The approach from Fira is straightforward, and the castle’s integration into daily life makes it an unusual stop, less a monument to be visited than a living quarter with a medieval backbone.
