The ruins of a Frankish tower house stand beside the church of Agios Ioannis in Kallifonio, a mountain village roughly 15 kilometres south of Kalavryta. The structure most likely dates from between the 13th and 15th centuries, though its precise origins remain uncertain. Only fragments of the north and west walls survive today, rising to a maximum height of about three metres, so the original scale of the building is unknown. The village itself was not always in its present position. Its earlier settlement was abandoned after an outbreak of plague, and the inhabitants relocated to the current site, building their new homes around the old tower. What remains is modest but evocative: a few courses of masonry that hint at the medieval presence in this remote upland landscape, now reduced to a quiet ruin beside the church.
