In Rethymno, the House of the Four Martyrs carries the memory of a Byzantine mansion raised around 1400, a survivor from the last centuries of Byzantine Crete. Its rooms and walls speak to the domestic architecture of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when prosperous households built for both comfort and permanence. The building also lends its name to the surrounding neighbourhood of the Four Martyrs, in the area of Agios Vasileios, and it remains tied to the heirs of Georgios Christoforakis. For a traveller, it is a rare chance to sense the everyday, residential side of a vanished era.
