In Vaphes, a village in the Apokoronou region of Chania, the House of S. Boundourakis stands as a Byzantine mansion whose story reaches well beyond its own walls. Excavations between 2000 and 2003 revealed remarkable layers of history here, including the single-aisled Church of Agioi Asomatoi, built in the 15th century upon earlier foundations. Together these remains open a window onto both domestic and religious life in Byzantine Crete, showing how sacred and secular architecture grew side by side across the centuries in this quiet corner of western Crete.
