The Byzantine chapel of the Ascension in Alikampos, a mountainous village 40 km from Chania at 310 metres in the foothills of the White Mountains, preserves important 14th-century frescoes. The painter John Pagomenos executed them in 1315-1316. The chapel itself is small, but its interior decoration is of considerable interest. The village, known for its wines and with a modern winery, sits among pine-covered hills. Near the settlement, archaeologists have identified items from the Pre-Minoan Era, indicating habitation here for thousands of years. Alikampos has about 250 permanent residents, many engaged in farming.
