On the Akrotiri peninsula near Chania, the Holy Trinity Monastery of Tzagarolon rises from the Cretan landscape, founded in 1601 by two brothers of the Venetian Zangaroli family on the site of an earlier church. This Greek Orthodox house carries the layered history of an island where Venetian and Byzantine worlds met. Today the working monastery welcomes visitors to its museum, and the monks still press olive oil and make wine on the premises, a living rhythm of worship and husbandry that has continued for centuries.
