On Dimogherontias Street in Kozani stands the Grigorios Vourkas Mansion, a protected residence that embodies Byzantine-era domestic architecture in northern Greece. Its walls belong to a tradition of urban houses built for comfort and standing, their proportions speaking to the domestic life of the period. The ground beneath is older still: the area has been continuously settled since antiquity, with traces of habitation reaching from the Archaic through Classical and Hellenistic times into the Roman era. Standing here, a traveler touches two layers of Greek history at once, the medieval town and the ancient world beneath it.
