Grigorakakis

Built in 1829, the Grigorakakis tower is a square, three-storey tower-house whose thick stone walls and small, high-set windows made it both home and fortress. Its date places it in the final years of the Greek War of Independence, when such defensive dwellings were still a practical necessity for a Maniot household. The tower stands as a blunt statement of security in a turbulent landscape, and nearby lie the ancient names Psamathous and oppidum Psamathus, reminders that this coast has long been watched over.
