At Lato Kritsas, a Hellenistic city in eastern Crete, the Great Stairway doubles as a theatrical space, a wide stepped structure cut into the sloping hillside. It served both as a formal entrance to the agora and as a gathering place for public assemblies or performances. Its stone seats face a flat area that could have been a stage or an orators' platform. The site spans Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic-Republican periods, when Greek cities shaped stone to hold both civic business and communal spectacle.
