Spanning the river that gives it its name, the Gorgopotamos Bridge Area in Fthiotida preserves a neoclassical stone bridge of modern construction, dated to 1904 and protected as a building of heritage significance. Bridges of this kind, raised across Greece in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, paired local stonework with the formal, symmetrical lines of neoclassical design. They answered practical transport needs while expressing the aesthetic ambitions of their age, and this one still carries that double character across the water it crosses.
