In the Kritika area of Rhodes stands Fountain F 76, a modest Byzantine water source known in Greek as Κρήνη. Fountains like this were the quiet heart of daily life in Byzantine settlements, where a reliable supply of water shaped where people lived and gathered. The surrounding ground holds deeper layers of history: excavations in 1987 revealed a cistern belonging to a Hellenistic agricultural installation south of the Turkish cemetery, alongside Hellenistic and Ottoman finds, including tombs and cisterns. Together they trace centuries of use across one small patch of the island.
