On Paxos, where fresh water has always been precious, the Fountain Cistern stands as a modest but vital piece of island infrastructure. This modern structure belongs to a long tradition of public water points serving everyday life in the municipality of Paxos, part of the Corfu prefecture, whose seat is Gaios and whose permanent population numbered 2,466 at the last census. A 1995 survey of the island also revealed rock-cut remains on a hilltop at Haghios Pantéléimonas Ozias, hinting at how long people have worked this landscape for water and shelter.
