High on Karpathos, the Byzantine fortifications known locally as Kastélli keep watch over the landscape below, a quiet reminder of medieval defence. Built sometime between the sixth and fifteenth centuries, the fortress occupies a strategic position overlooking the coast, the kind of commanding site Byzantine settlements chose to repel raids and invasions. Its military architecture now survives in ruins, yet the walls still trace the shape of that long vigilance. Walking among them, you sense how geography itself became a weapon, and how generations entrusted their safety to stone and height.
