High on the south coast of Salamis, above the Saronic Gulf near Peristeria, a narrow cave runs some 47 metres into the hillside and opens into ten small chambers. Tradition holds that the playwright Euripides came here to compose his tragedies, a story ancient writers linked to his reputed love of solitude. Excavations between 1994 and 2000 uncovered traces of use spanning the classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, and a shrine of Dionysos stood nearby.
