The Dema Wall stretches more than four kilometres across Attica, sealing a strategic gap between Mount Aigaleos and Mount Parnes. This ancient fortification served Athens across an extraordinary span of centuries, with construction and use reaching from the Classical era through the Roman period, roughly the fifth century BCE to the fourth century CE. Its long life reflects how vital this pass remained to the city's defence. Today the wall survives only partially, yet its course can still be traced through the landscape, a quiet monument to centuries of watchfulness over a vulnerable frontier.
