Clock Tower

Πύργος Ωρολογίου, Δαύλεια, Βοιωτία

In the town of Daulia, in the Boeotia region, a neoclassical clock tower stands as a civic landmark, a stone structure with a simple belfry that still keeps its place in the local streetscape. Towers like this one, often built in the nineteenth or early twentieth century, marked time and order for growing communities during the early years of the modern Greek state. The surrounding area carries far older layers: nearby Daulis and Dauleia echo through archaic, classical, Roman, and late antique periods, and excavations between 1996 and 2010, conducted during natural gas pipeline works between Mavroneri and Antikyra, brought finds including pipes to light.
