High in the hills of Chania, near the village of Meskla, the Classical Fortress once stood guard over the surrounding region of Platania. Excavations in 2001 uncovered a fourth-century tower and a stretch of the ancient city's fortification wall, tangible traces of the defensive architecture that protected this strategic outpost in classical antiquity. Though much of the site remains to be explored, these surviving remnants offer a vivid glimpse into how ancient communities secured their territory, watching the passes and approaches from a commanding position above the landscape.
